No Winter Maintenance at SCC sites

As we head into the winter months, we want to remind you that none of the SCC sites along the waterway have winter maintenance. For your safety all sites are closed to visitors. Those that have walking access are use at your own risk.

Thanks to HRM parks staff, certain trails in Shubie Park will have winter maintenance. You can find the details HERE

We will re-open all sites in Spring 2023, and they will be once again, Yours To Explore!

Shubie Park Tree Lighting 2022

Join us on Sunday Dec 4 2022 at 4pm for the Annual Shubie Park Tree Lighting. This Community Event is for the whole family! Cocoa, roasting marshmallows on a bonfire, music, and a visit from Father Christmas. It’s always a great way to kick off the season.

NEW this year is an outdoor movie screening after the tree lighting.

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (26 mins)

  • Mickey’s Christmas Carol (26 mins).

Don’t forget to bring a blanket and a chair!

Just a reminder to be mindful about parking for this event. There are a few parking lots that are about a 5–10-minute walk away from the Tree Lighting. They include; Shubie Park Pump Track & Ball Diamond, Shubie Campground, Shubie Dog Park Entrance, and Dartmouth Crossing (follow the overpass walkway). Always remember when parking, to be mindful of no parking signs and neighbours’ driveways.

Hope to see you there!

2022 guided tour program wrapped up last week

Our summer season has come to an end, and what a wonderful summer it was! History tours (Shubie Park) and the Flume House tours (Starr Park) occurred weekly lead by our fabulous volunteer Richard MacMichael.  These tours gave folks a glimpse into how the canal operated and who the people were behind these operations. The Marine Railway tours in Starr Park welcomed the community to learn more about the history of flume house but also the history of Downtown Dartmouth.

Thanks to the support received from the Canada Summer Jobs program, the SCC was able to hire Hanna Rudderham for the 2022 season. She aided Richard in leading groups on scheduled tours at both sites. As well, Hanna was onsite giving tours at the Fairbanks Centre for anyone who stopped in to see the interpretive centre or try out the lock model.

Over the course of the season, Richard and Hanna had the chance to chat with some amazing folks both local and out-of-province. Many of the tour participants shared their own experiences with the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway and it was lovely hearing how their stories were connected to the history of the waterway.

Thank you to all, nearly 200 visitors, who signed up for the tours and shared your feedback with us making this year another resounding success! While weekly scheduled tours wrapped up on October 30th, history hikes can be booked through the winter by contacting the SCC office.

Finally, a big thanks to Richard for continuing to share his passion, and another thanks to everyone who came out and took a tour.  The summer tours are one of the many reasons that the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway is Yours To Explore.

Sites are now open use caution

Update September 27:

The Shubenacadie Canal Sites are open today, September 27. Please use caution when on the trails or in the water, as repairs are ongoing. The Lock 3 fence is still broken and we are working as quickly as possible to have it fixed.

Storm causes site closures

SCC sites will close at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 23, due to Hurricane Fiona.  As well, the Saturday History Hike has been cancelled.

Sites will remain closed until they have been inspected for hazards.  For a list of closures visit our attractions link HERE
