African Heritage Month 2023 - Seas of Struggle

This year’s African Heritage Month provincial theme, Seas of struggle – African Peoples from Shore to Shore, outlines the struggles of people of African Descent faced from the shores of Africa to the shores of Nova Scotia. Recognizing that the one thing that has remained constant in our history is the Atlantic Ocean. The long-standing history of people of African Descent in the development of Canada, the sea has played a vital role.

As a shipping hub in the early 1800s, the majority of Nova Scotia’s revenue came from taxes on trade goods. At this time, salt fish, beef, pork, timber and flour, were traded to West Indian slave plantations in exchange for slave-made rum, sugar, molasses, cocoa, coffee, etc. Not only would these traded goods be used by canal workers, when sold within the colony, the taxes the province collected from these imports were instrumental in funding the many industries in Dartmouth, including the canal .

No Winter Maintenance at SCC sites

As we head into the winter months, we want to remind you that none of the SCC sites along the waterway have winter maintenance. For your safety all sites are closed to visitors. Those that have walking access are use at your own risk.

Thanks to HRM parks staff, certain trails in Shubie Park will have winter maintenance. You can find the details HERE

We will re-open all sites in Spring 2023, and they will be once again, Yours To Explore!

Don’t forget to bring a blanket and a chair!

Just a reminder to be mindful about parking for this event. There are a few parking lots that are about a 5–10-minute walk away from the Tree Lighting. They include; Shubie Park Pump Track & Ball Diamond, Shubie Campground, Shubie Dog Park Entrance, and Dartmouth Crossing (follow the overpass walkway). Always remember when parking, to be mindful of no parking signs and neighbours’ driveways.
