Fire Safety
We all enjoy having a picnic at the park. Please remember if your picnic includes a BBQ, you play an important role in fire prevention and detection. Here are the rules for keeping our sites and trails fire safe, in any season:
No smoking.
Barbecues (charcoal and gas) are permitted as long as they are 75 cm (29.5 in) off the ground.
Place your barbecue on a solid surface so it cannot tip over and be sure it is a safe distance from anything that can burn.
Any form of wood burning is prohibited.
Use designated picnic sites when possible. Always have a source of water available to extinguish any flare ups.
When you are finished a full cleanup is required. Tips for using a charcoal BBQ, dispose of the ashes by soaking them with water and placing them in a covered metal container (remember coals take 4-8 hrs to cool down on their own and that’s when oxygen is removed).
When fire hazard ratings are EXTREME, barbecues - including propane and charcoal barbecues - are prohibited in parks. Follow @ns_DNRR for the latest news.
If you spot a fire, smell or see smoke, immediately call 9-1-1 and report your location.
The following activities are prohibited in sites, parks and trails at all times:
Smoking
