Coming June 15 to 21, 2020, to a Park Near You

Join the Shubenacadie Canal Commission for a Virtual Park Cleanup the week of June 15 to June 21!

While parks and beaches are open, the Nova Scotia government has advised people to remain in their own communities as much as possible. Luckily, the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway stretches over 100 km across Nova Scotia, so there are plenty of opportunities for you to visit while still respecting public health directives. This is a chance to discover the Shubenacadie Canal in your own neighbourhood!

Bring a bag, gloves, and a mask, and get ready to help make our sites even more beautiful. While you’re out collecting trash, snap a photo and tag @shubiecanal for a chance to win a copy of River of Dreams: The Saga of the Shubenacadie Canal, which features a full history of the canal and stunning photography by Donna Barnett. Remember to use the hashtags #TDParkPeople and #TDReadyCommitment.

This event is sponsored through the generous support of the TD Park People Grants Program. This program provides essential funding to support park groups in delivering over 334 awesome nature-based activities that foster environmental education, sustainability, and stewardship in cities across Canada. Read more about this program and our funding partners below.

Participating Sites

The following are the sites that are partly or wholly managed by the Shubenacadie Canal Commission:

There are many other sites along the waterway that are not directly managed by the Commission, including several provincial and municipal parks. We would still love it if people took part at these sites as well, and you will still be entered into our contest if you do! However, we would ask that you use your own discretion and be mindful not to enter onto private property.

Guidelines

We strongly encourage all participants to wear gloves and masks for their own safety.

Please respect social distancing at all times. Several paths have been designated as being one-way for the duration of the public health order. If you see arrows on the ground or on signs, please respect them.

This cleanup is spaced out over a week in the hope of avoiding large crowds at any site. That said, evenings and weekends will likely be busier. If you are able to take part at a non-peak time (e.g. on a weekday during the daytime), we encourage you to do so.

Any trash collected may be placed in the bins at each site. Our parks have multiple bins, so if one is full, please put the trash into a different bin that is not full.
