Masons working on the canal often identified their work with a mark. Seen here as a star shape. Thomas Elliot and a Mr. Graham were stone masons. They worked on one or more of the six locks which were constructed between Lake Banook and the harbor. They may have lived in the Octerloney Street area and Elliot St may have been named after Thomas or his family. They might also have been involved in the digging out of the basin which created Sullivan’s Pond.
