October is Mi’kmaq History Month! This year’s theme, Year of the Indigenous Languages, aims to establish a link between language development, peace and reconciliation.
Did you know that Shubenacadie was named after a Mi’kmaq word (Sipekne’batik) meaning land of the wild turnip .
The Mi’kmaq traveled along the Shubenacadie Waterway. Stone points, adzes, and gouging tools are all evidence of Mi’kmaw presence in this area. This vital water highway served as the main route between their summer camps on the shores of Halifax and Dartmouth and their winter camps in Nova Scotia’s forested interior. You can find out more here.
